About our winemaker . . . .
Dave Harvey –
As a child my father, a musician by trade, made wine at home once or twice a year out of whatever he could come across. He would drag his four children to Mt. Spokane to pick huckleberries every August. That is, until the August I was eight years old. That year I took it upon myself to secure the lid on his garbage can fermenter tightly just before leaving on a weekend trip. When returning home, the result was quickly detected by everyone’s nose. The garbage can had burst and the basement was covered ceiling to floor with our hard earned huckleberries. Mother quickly forbade the practice of making wine in her house.
That event stayed with me to young adulthood. After discovering the biology and chemistry behind the explosion at Washington State University, I was fortunate to land a job on the bottling line at Latah Creek winery in Spokane, WA. Since 1988, I have had the good fortune to learn on the job the intricate art/science of making grapes to wine. As an assistant winemaker I spent three years at Caterina Winery in Spokane, WA and eight years at Terra Blanca winery in Benton City, WA. My career as a lead winemaker began at Gordon Brothers Estate in Pasco, WA. While at Gordon Brothers the wines won many awards and received many kudos, including Decanter Magazines “World’s Best Syrah.” After consulting at a winery in the San Juan Islands while working at Gordon Brothers, my family decided to spend a year there full time. Finding the conditions of “island life” less than ideal, we returned to the Tri-Cities in 2006 where I started at Preston Premium Wines.
